A textile designer (纺织设计师) creates fabric patterns, colorways, and collections for bedding, apparel, upholstery, and home textiles. You work in CAD tools, develop strike-offs with mills, and present seasonal lines to buyers or brand teams. Brief History

Textile design is older than the job title. Before CAD, before Pantone books, before design schools — someone decided which flowers went on which fabric. In 1801, Joseph Marie Jacquard's punch-card loom let weavers reproduce complex patterns mechanically. That was the first time "design" became a repeatable file instead of a master craftsman's memory.

Printed textiles followed a parallel path. Screen printing in the 20th century, then rotary printing, then digital. Each jump made it cheaper to run a new pattern — and harder to stand out when every factory could copy a trend in six weeks.

The modern textile designer role crystallized in the 1980s–90s as retailers started controlling design instead of just buying what mills offered. Target, IKEA, and European bedding brands wanted exclusive collections. Someone had to translate a mood board into a weave spec the mill could actually run at MOQ 3,000 meters.

Surprising fact: some of the best-selling bedding patterns in history weren't designed by famous names — they were adapted from stock mill libraries and tweaked one color at a time. Production constraints shape design more than most design schools admit.

What You'll Do Each Day

Most of the week is screen work in NedGraphics, Lectra, Illustrator, or similar tools.

  • Develop seasonal color palettes and trend boards
  • Create repeat patterns and send strike-off requests to mills
  • Evaluate lab dips; adjust designs for yarn count, weave, and MOQ
  • Present collections to merchandising or buyers
  • Archive design files and research trade-show trends (Heimtextil, Premiere Vision)

Standard office hours apply, with factory or mill visits as needed. Two to three months before each season launch, revision requests become daily routine.

Working Conditions

Textile designers work in a studio or office — quiet, screen-heavy, with periodic visits to mills and supplier factories. Five-day weeks are standard; season deadlines create two to three intense months per year and one to two weeks of trade-show travel annually. Eye strain and deadline pressure are the main occupational strains, not physical labor.

Design choices bend to production reality: a favored pattern may be dropped when the mill quotes the weave above target cost at required MOQ. Working within those constraints is central to the job.
